A rather needless comment, no? Both rude if I was a native speaker, and rude if I was not.

Perhaps also consider that your writer, as a “native” English speaker on account of being English, was using maths as the British English abbreviation of mathematics in its singular noun form (as in “mathematics is my best subject”). Now run along, there’s a good chap.
